Dongba, meaning “East Dam”, whispers tales of a time when these structures controlled the Ba River’s flow. Dongba Township, nestled between Beijing’s 5th and 6th Ring Roads, holds a rich history. The 2020 census revealed a population of 124,163 residing in this area spanning 24.6 square kilometers. Dongba isn’t just a name. It’s a connection to the Yuan Dynasty’s ambitious water management projects. This area, bordering several other townships including Cuigezhuang and Jinzhan, evolved from a simple township in 1953. It transformed through various administrative stages, even becoming part of the People’s Commune of Sino-German Friendship in 1961. By 2003, Dongba achieved “area” status while retaining its township identity. Today, Dongba comprises 32 subdivisions, a mix of 23 residential communities and 9 villages. This intricate network of communities forms the vibrant tapestry of modern Dongba. From the bustling streets of Gaoyangshu Community to the tranquil village of Dongxiaojing, Dongba offers a glimpse into both urban and rural life in Beijing.
