In 1925, a seed was planted. The Osaka City Momoyama Hospital Sumiyoshi Branch opened its doors, a precursor to what would become the Osaka City Sumiyoshi Hospital. This branch, dedicated to infectious diseases, served a vital role in the community. Fast forward to 1950, and the Osaka City Sumiyoshi Hospital officially emerged, growing from its humble beginnings to a 185-bed facility with nine departments. Osaka City Sumiyoshi Hospital became a cornerstone of healthcare in southern Osaka. It offered a wide range of services. These included internal medicine, psychiatry, pediatrics, surgery, and more. The hospital also placed a strong emphasis on maternal and child health. In 2008, it received recognition as a Regional Perinatal Maternal and Child Medical Center. Osaka City Sumiyoshi Hospital also housed educational institutions. The Osaka City Higher Nursing School, later the Osaka City Sumiyoshi Nursing School, was established within the hospital in 1971. The Osaka City Midwifery School also shared the hospital grounds, further cementing Sumiyoshi Hospital’s role in nurturing future healthcare professionals. Despite its long history and community impact, Osaka City Sumiyoshi Hospital faced challenges. Its aging facilities and declining patient numbers led to discussions about its future. In 2011, a plan was proposed to rebuild the hospital. However, this plan was later revised. The city opted to integrate the hospital’s maternity functions with the Prefectural Emergency and General Medical Center. This decision sparked debate and concern about the cost and the loss of a valued local institution. Ultimately, Osaka City Sumiyoshi Hospital closed its doors in March 2018. A temporary clinic, the Sumiyoshi Clinic, opened on the former hospital grounds to provide limited outpatient services. The closure marked the end of an era, but the legacy of Osaka City Sumiyoshi Hospital continues to resonate in the community it served for so many years.
