Envision a scene from the 16th century. We are standing before Mănăstirea Radu Vodă. It stands as a symbol of gratitude and resilience.

Mănăstirea Radu Vodă is a Romanian Orthodox monastery in Bucharest. Its history stretches back centuries. It holds a special place in the city’s heart.

Alexandru II Mircea and his lady Ecaterina founded it. This was between 1568 and 1577. They wanted to thank God for their victory in battle. They envisioned it as the metropolitan church of the capital.

The area’s history goes back even further. Archaeological evidence reveals inhabitants from the Paleolithic era. This makes it the oldest known settlement in Romania. The site also contains remains of a fortified settlement from the Dacian Era.

Initially named Sfânta Treime meaning The Holy Trinity. Mănăstirea Radu Vodă faced turbulent times. In 1595, Turkish forces seized it. Sinan Pasha transformed it into a fortified position. However, his efforts were futile. Mihai Viteazul’s victory forced the Turks to retreat. Before leaving, they destroyed the monastery.

In 1614, Radu Mihnea began reconstruction. He preserved the original design. From then on the church became known by the founder’s name. His son Alexandru Coconul oversaw its painting.

During the Phanariote period, Greek abbots managed the monastery. Mănăstirea Radu Vodă became one of Bucharest’s wealthiest monasteries. However, this wealth did not translate into improvements to the buildings.

The architectural design of Mănăstirea Radu Vodă mirrors the episcopal church at Curtea de Argeș. The main difference is its brick construction. The design features a triconc plan. A large nave boasts a dome. Three towers grace the porch. The main one rests on twelve columns symbolizing the apostles.

Restoration efforts have shaped its appearance. Architect Ștefan Bals led a significant restoration. This happened between 1967 and 1974. It returned the building to its original architectural form. An earlier 19th-century reconstruction had added a neo-Gothic style.

Inside, the iconostasis stands out. It showcases a beautiful Baroque style. Tombstones in the porch mark the resting places of historical figures. Among them is Vlad Voievod. He was the son of Mihnea Turcitul.

The founder’s tomb lies to the right. An inscription commemorates Radu Voievod’s reigns. It recalls his victories and time as ruler of Wallachia and Moldavia.

To the north stands the bell tower. It is a remnant of the original monastery complex. Despite damage from earthquakes it retains its original appearance.

The Theological Seminary buildings date back to 1893. They reflect the care of Ion Scorteanu and Maria Schiopescu. In 2002, a new modern seminary began construction.

Mănăstirea Radu Vodă stands as a testament to history. Its walls have witnessed battles, destruction, and rebirth. Today, it welcomes visitors to experience its spiritual and architectural beauty. The monastery continues to be a place of worship and reflection. It links us to Romania’s rich past.
