Imagine a small congregation a satellite church of Evangelismos of the Theotokos. These early parishioners laid the foundation for what would become one of the oldest Greek Orthodox parishes in the Philadelphia area.
Saint Demetrios wasn’t just a church. It was a beacon a gathering place for Greek immigrants. It offered solace community and a connection to their heritage. The documentary “Serving Faithfully for 75 Years” beautifully captures this spirit. It highlights the dedication of individuals like Demosthenes Vasiliou and Mary Seis who meticulously documented the church’s history.
The church wasn’t just about religious services. It housed various ministries. The GOYA the Church Choir and the St Barbara Philoptochos Society thrived within its walls. Boy Scout Troop 302 even found a home there. The church became a hub of activity a vibrant center for the Greek community.
But growth led to a move. The community expanded. Saint Demetrios relocated to its current location on Powell Lane in Upper Darby. This new location became the heart of a burgeoning Greektown a place where the traditions and culture of Greece flourished. Businesses shops and even Greek-language media emerged creating a thriving community.
The 75th-anniversary celebration was a testament to the enduring spirit of Saint Demetrios. Hundreds attended. Original members shared stories of resilience and dedication. Mayor Thomas Micozzie’s surprise revelation of his Greek ancestry perfectly captured the spirit of unity and inclusion.
Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey praised Saint Demetrios for its unique dedication to preserving the Greek language.
