Was it fate, or just clever city planning that placed the Schauspielhaus Erfurt in such a historically rich area? Right here in the Klostergang, this building whispers tales of social clubs, wartime drama, and a city’s cultural heartbeat.

The Schauspielhaus Erfurt wasn’t always a theater. Imagine this: In 1897, this spot was a social hub, built by the Geselligkeitsverein Ressource. This club was for Erfurt’s elite. Military men, civil servants, merchants, and educated citizens gathered here. The neo-baroque building hosted parties. It also hosted leisure activities and important discussions.

Fast forward to the aftermath of World War II. The Herrenverein’s time had passed. But the building’s purpose shifted. In 1949, the city transformed it into a theater. Architect Walter Beck led the change. The Schauspielhaus Erfurt opened its doors on August 29, 1949. The opening play was Iphigenie auf Tauris. Initially named Neues Theater, it was renamed Schauspielhaus Erfurt in 1956.

For decades, the Schauspielhaus Erfurt thrived. In 1957, a Kleine Bühne was added. This smaller stage offered cabaret and other intimate performances. From 1997 to 2003, the Schauspielhaus was Erfurt’s only theater, when the Alte Oper closed for renovations.

However, the winds of change brought challenges. In 2002, the city decided to close the Schauspielhaus Erfurt after the new Theater Erfurt opened. The final curtain fell in 2003. The building was left empty. It slowly fell into disrepair.

Yet, the story doesn’t end there. In 2013, activists briefly occupied the Schauspielhaus. Then, in 2015, the Saxonia Media Filmproduktion used it for filming the children’s series Schloss Einstein. That same year, the KulturQuartier Erfurt e.V. stepped in.

This association aimed to revive the Schauspielhaus. They developed plans for its future use. In 2016, the KulturQuartier Schauspielhaus eG iG was founded. This cooperative seeks to own the building and manage it for cultural purposes. Previews and events have drawn crowds. These events showed the potential of the space.

Today, the Schauspielhaus Erfurt is undergoing renovations. Since April 11, 2022, construction crews have been hard at work. The goal is to transform this once-abandoned theater into a vibrant cultural center. The KulturQuartier envisions a place for art, creativity, and community. This forgotten gem will once again pulse with life. The Schauspielhaus Erfurt is poised to reclaim its place in the city’s cultural landscape. It stands as a testament to Erfurt’s enduring spirit and its commitment to the arts.
