Hidden in plain sight on Avenida da Repúblic stands Casa Barbot. It’s more than just a beautiful building. It’s a time capsule whispering tales of artistry, family legacies, and a city’s evolving identity. Casa Barbot was built in 1904. It was originally commissioned by Bernardo Pinto Abrunhosa. However, the house adopted its current name from Ermelinda Barbot. She became the owner in 1945. The house represents a unique blend of architectural styles. It embodies Art Nouveau with hints of Arabic inspiration on its roof. The neoclassical-inspired tiles and oriental elements further enrich its aesthetic. The design echoes the French style of the late 19th century. The mansion has survived several transformations over the years. Each owner left their mark, yet the original structure remains. It still boasts a basement and two upper floors. Ventura Terra, the architect renowned for the “Sala dos Passos Perdidos” in Lisbon’s São Bento Palace, contributed to Casa Barbot’s design. He collaborated with sculptor Alves de Sousa, stucco master Domingos Baganha, and painter Veloso Salgado. Their combined talents created an interior brimming with artistic detail. Casa Barbot’s facade, facing the avenue, showcases two superimposed balconies. A circular balcony, adorned with a bulbous canopy, graces the corner. On the north side, a hexagonal roof crowns the upper terrace. An elegant exterior staircase leads to the iron-covered portal below. The municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia acquired Casa Barbot, restoring it to its former glory. Today, it thrives as the Casa da Cultura, a cultural hub hosting exhibitions, debates, workshops, and musical performances. Casa Barbot isn’t just a building. It is a testament to Vila Nova de Gaia’s rich history and artistic legacy. It is a place where the past and present intertwine, inviting you to explore its hidden stories.
