A majestic structure. That’s the Lille Cathedral. Its towering presence dominates the cityscape a testament to faith and perseverance. Lille Cathedral the Basilica of Notre Dame de la Treille is more than just a building. It’s a living history book. Its story spans centuries reflecting the city’s growth and devotion.

Originally it was built to honor the Virgin Mary. The cathedral’s name comes from a 12th-century statue of the saint. People believed this statue had miraculous properties. The construction project had a dual purpose. It aimed to rebuild a grand church after the destruction of the Collegiate Church of St Peter during the French Revolution. The statue of Our Lady of the Treille had resided there for over 600 years. The second aim was to establish a bishop’s seat in Lille. Lille was part of the Archdiocese of Cambrai at that time. A new bishopric was deemed crucial to solidify Lille’s religious status. It was also essential for the growing population during the Industrial Revolution.

Construction started in 1854. An international competition was held for the design. Interestingly the top two prizes went to English projects. However the idea of entrusting the Virgin Mary’s church to Anglican architects raised concerns. So the project fell to Lille architect Charles Leroy. The construction was a long and challenging process. It took nearly 150 years. Several generations of architects oversaw it from 1856 to 1975. The final touch a modern facade designed by Pierre-Louis Carlier and engineer Peter Rice was completed in 1999. Parts of the original plan were abandoned due to various constraints.

Pope Pius IX granted a decree for the Marian statue’s pontifical coronation in 1874. The Archbishop of Cambrai performed the coronation. The church became a minor basilica in 1904 under Pope Pius X. In 1913 the same Pope created the Diocese of Lille. The Basilica became its cathedral. The Diocese became a metropolis in 2008 making the Cathedral a metropolitan cathedral.

The statue of Our Lady of the Treille has a rich history. Three periods of miraculous events are associated with it 1254 1519-1527 and 1634-1638. The 1254 miracle involved the healing of many patients. The 16th-century miracles varied from demonic possession to cures for blindness and plague. In 1254 a confraternity was established. An annual procession also honored the statue. The French Revolution interrupted this tradition. After the Collegiate Church’s destruction the statue’s cult largely faded. However it was revived in 1842 by Charles Bernard. He instituted the month of Mary and placed the statue in St Catherine’s Church. The jubilee celebration of 1854 was a pivotal moment in restoring the cult. The acquisition of land for the new church further strengthened this revival.

The creation of the diocese also involved complex considerations. Lille’s population was growing. There were financial and linguistic aspects as well. The Diocese of Cambrai covered areas with French and Flemish as languages. The Flemish population was partly due to immigration from Belgium. The creation of a new diocese would generate income. This new income would largely cover the expenses.
