Years later Eckstein’s business partners made a generous gift. They donated land to the Johannesburg Town Council. This gift included land for the Johannesburg Zoo and Hermann Eckstein Park. The offer came with a remarkable condition. The facilities had to remain open to all races. This was exceptionally progressive during the colonial era. Zoo Lake’s multi-racial nature persisted even through the apartheid era. This was a powerful testament to its founders vision.
