“This shouldn’t be here!” That might be your first thought as Yatsu Tideland appears. This tidal flat borders a residential area. High-rise apartments are visible in the distance. We are standing at Yatsu Tideland in Narashino, Chiba Prefecture. It is a unique place with a rich history.

Yatsu Tideland is a 40-hectare wetland. It was designated a Ramsar Site in 1993. This means it’s recognized as an internationally important wetland. Once, it was part of Japan’s largest tidal flats. Much of that area has been reclaimed since then.

Typhoon Roke once greeted visitors to Japan. The storm made its way north. Migrant birds sought shelter here. The typhoon’s tidal surge brought very high water. Normal roosting spots were swamped.

Even a tidy typhoon leaves debris. Neat piles of leaves appeared. Clean-up efforts started early.

The surrounding land has been reclaimed. Concrete banks now confine the mudflats of Yatsu Tideland. Buildings, a school, and a main road border the area.

Birdwatchers flock to Yatsu Tideland. You can see many species here. Grey Plovers explore the mud. Black-tailed Gulls roost on posts. Grey Herons fish in deeper water. Cormorants, Great Egrets, and Little Egrets are common sights. A Blue Rock Thrush might be spotted. Brown-eared Bulbuls screech nearby. White-cheeked Starlings also reside here. Great Tits and Japanese White-eyes flit about. Carrion Crows and Large-billed Crows are also seen.

Sometimes, rare birds appear. A Red-necked Phalarope was once blown in by a storm. Local birders get excited when they see it.

The visitor center provides scopes for better viewing. There are also toilets, a cafe, and a shop. Education features enhance the experience. An eager guide can help identify birds.

The tides here can be unpredictable. The water might flood back in earlier than expected. This doesn’t always reveal much mud.

Little Grebes nest on the freshwater pond. Common Greenshanks and Black-winged Stilts stay ahead of the rising waters.

Yatsu Tideland was preserved by local residents. They saved it from development and trash dumping. Their grassroots efforts made this place a conservation site. The Yatsu Higata Nature Observation Center is very active. Local residents view trips here as part of their daily lives.

You can walk on the flat. Pails and spades are provided to explore with. Discover crabs and worms. Children run around searching for creatures. All captured animals must be returned to their locations.

Yatsu Tideland offers simple pleasures. It teaches environmental stewardship. It showcases biodiversity in an urban area. A visit here connects you to nature.
