A crash. A deafening roar. Then silence. That’s how many in Waldblick remember December 1943. An Allied bomber fell from the sky. It crashed near the Wilhelmstrasse and Max-Planck-Strasse. Homes were damaged. Lives were lost.

Waldblick. A small village nestled on the edge of Berlin. Its history is one of quiet growth. Then came the Berlin Wall. Waldblick found itself on the front line. The Wall sliced through its heart. It separated families and friends. It changed everything.

Before the Wall. Waldblick was a blossoming community. It began in the early 20th century. A Mr Buckow from Tempelhof divided his land. New streets appeared. The Annastrasse Elisabeth-Strasse and Margarethen-Strasse. These streets were named after his daughters. The name Waldblick itself. A tribute to his daughters. A symbol of a peaceful future. A future stolen by the Cold War.

Life in Waldblick during the Cold War was fraught with danger. The Arcostrasse Keplerstrasse and Lichtenrader Strasse were cut off. West Berliners couldn’t reach their properties. People fled across the border. Some succeeded. Others were shot by border guards. Eduard Wroblewski in 1966. Herbert Kiebler in 1975. Their deaths stand as tragic reminders of the Wall’s brutality.

Waldblick also housed a wooden barracks. The Deutsche Volkspolizei occupied it. Later it became a base for the Grenzregiment 42 Fritz Perlitz. A stark symbol of oppression. A silent witness to countless desperate attempts at escape.

After the Wall fell. Waldblick breathed again. A celebration marked the border’s opening. A Christian social welfare organization moved into the former barracks. New homes arose. The Hans-Olde-Strasse Lesser-Ury-Weg and Lovis-Corinth-Strasse sprang up. Waldblick expanded. Its residents rebuilt their lives and their community.

Today Waldblick stands as a testament to resilience. A community that endured hardship and emerged stronger. It’s a reminder that even in the shadow of a wall. Hope can endure. A reminder that even in the darkest of times. New beginnings are possible. A walk through Waldblick today. It’s a walk through history. A history of loss and triumph. A history of courage and community. A history that shapes its present and its future.
