Nestled in the tranquil educational setting of Momoyama Goryo, Kyoto Prefectural Momoyama High School overlooks the city. The school boasts a rich history, deeply intertwined with the educational landscape of Kyoto. Originally, the predecessor to Kyoto Prefectural Momoyama High School was known as Kyoto Prefectural Momoyama Higher Girls’ School. This institution later merged with the Kyoto Prefectural Women’s Normal School in 1918. In 1921, Kyoto Prefectural Momoyama Junior High School was established nearby. This eventually paved the way for the modern Kyoto Prefectural Momoyama High School we see today. The school officially opened its doors in October 1948. Kyoto Prefectural Momoyama High School was the sole prefectural high school in Fushimi Ward for a significant period. It remained so until the establishment of Kyoto Prefectural Higashiyama High School in 1977. The school offers a diverse range of academic programs, catering to various interests. These include full-day and part-time courses in General Education, Natural Science, and Commerce. The Natural Science course is particularly focused on mathematics and science, allowing students from all academic backgrounds to pursue their passions. Kyoto Prefectural Momoyama High School’s commitment to fostering well-rounded individuals is evident in its vibrant extracurricular activities. A remarkable 90% of students participate in these activities, ranging from sports like archery and basketball to cultural pursuits such as the Global Science Club and Shogi Club. The school has even seen national recognition in competitions. The school’s campus has also undergone significant transformations over the years. Large-scale renovations started in December 2022. A temporary school building has been erected on the school grounds to accommodate students during this time. The new No. 1 building, facing the main gate, became operational in January 2024, while the new No. 2 building, to the left of the main gate, is scheduled to open in August 2025. Further renovations are planned for the No. 4 building and the gymnasium. Kyoto Prefectural Momoyama High School has been recognized for its dedication to science education. In 2010, it was designated as a Super Science High School (SSH) by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. This designation, renewed in 2015 and 2020, reflects the school’s focus on inquiry-based, integrated science education. Even amid renovations, the spirit of Kyoto Prefectural Momoyama High School remains strong, continuing its legacy of academic excellence and extracurricular vibrancy.
