In 1716, Archbishop Edward Synge consecrated St. Luke’s Church. This very Thomas Burgh House began its life serving Dublin’s faithful. Today, Thomas Burgh House stands as a testament to transformation. A devastating fire in 1986 left it a roofless ruin. Only the original four walls, three chancel walls, and a portion of the mosaic floor survived. Even these were scarred by time and neglect. Overgrown trees had further damaged the chancel and crypt vaults. Thomas Burgh House was redesigned. It then became a state-of-the-art office building. The glass-clad structure elegantly incorporates the original church walls. The modern design contrasts beautifully with the historic stone. Inside, bespoke workstations fill the light-filled space. The original church windows offer unique views. The building’s namesake, Thomas Burgh, was the original architect of St. Luke’s. He also designed iconic Dublin structures like the old Custom House and Trinity College Library. He became Surveyor General of Ireland in 1700. He was even a Member of Parliament. Renaming St. Luke’s as Thomas Burgh House honors his architectural legacy. The building stands prominently between St. Luke’s Avenue and Newmarket Square. It’s next to the Newmarket Yards residential development. It features underfloor heating, VRF air conditioning, and automated windows for ventilation. This blend of old and new makes Thomas Burgh House a true Dublin landmark.
