Envision a colossal, rusted metal sphere. Now, imagine that same sphere reborn, its surface gleaming with vibrant, updated maps of the world. This, my friends, is the Babson Globe. The Babson Globe isn’t just a giant ball; it’s a symbol of global understanding, a testament to the vision of Roger Babson, the founder of Babson College. Roger Babson envisioned the globe back in 1947, dreaming of a structure that would inspire students to engage with world affairs. He and his grandson even financed the initial $200,000 to bring this dream to life. When the Babson Globe was completed in 1955, it was the world’s largest rotating globe, a marvel of engineering that drew visitors from far and wide. Imagine standing here in the 1950s, watching this 28-foot behemoth slowly spin, its 25-ton weight seemingly defying gravity. It’s a sight that captured the imagination of thousands for years. But time, as it always does, took its toll. By the late 1970s, the once-gleaming globe had fallen into disrepair. The porcelain tiles representing the continents began to crumble and fall, leaving a skeletal, rusted frame. The machinery that once spun the globe ground to a halt. There was even talk of demolishing the beloved landmark. But the Babson community rallied. Students and faculty formed the “Save the Globe” committee, a passionate group determined to preserve this symbol of global awareness. Their dedication paid off. Donations poured in, including a substantial contribution from entrepreneur Michael Smurfit, and the restoration began. In 1993, the Babson Globe was reborn. The rusted metal was replaced with 506 vibrant vinyl panels. These panels displayed the most up-to-date satellite imagery, transforming the globe into a modern marvel. Then, in 2019, the Babson Globe was moved to its current home in Kerry Murphy Healey Park. Here it stands as a testament to the power of vision, perseverance, and a commitment to global understanding. The Babson Globe spins once more, inviting us to appreciate the world in all its complexity and beauty.
