The Agia Sophia Stadium stands proudly in Nea Filadelfeia. This northwestern suburb of Athens is its home. The stadium’s story began long before its inauguration in September 2022. The dream of a new stadium arose from the need to replace the old Nikos Goumas Stadium that was seriously damaged from the 1999 Athens earthquake.
In 1926, land intended for refugee housing became a training ground for Greek refugees. A stadium was built there in 1930. It was named Nikos Goumas. It served as AEK Athens FC’s home for many years.
In 2003, plans to demolish the old stadium and build a new one faced legal challenges. It wasn’t until Dimitris Melissanidis stepped in after the club’s bankruptcy in 2013 that the vision for the Agia Sophia Stadium was revived.
The Agia Sophia Stadium name itself is significant. It commemorates the Byzantine-built Hagia Sophia. This Orthodox cathedral is in Constantinople now Istanbul. The stadium’s commercial name is OPAP Arena. This comes from a sponsorship deal with the Greek Organisation of Football Prognostics S.A.
Construction began in July 2017. It faced numerous hurdles including legal battles and environmental concerns. Yet, the stadium persevered. It finally opened its doors in September 2022. The Agia Sophia Stadium construction cost about 98.7 million euros.
The Agia Sophia Stadium boasts a seating capacity of 32,500. It is the third-largest football stadium in Greece. It offers an all-seater experience for fans. But the stadium is more than just a place to watch football. It is a sports, remembrance and culture center.
Inside the Agia Sophia Stadium, you will find a small church dedicated to Loukas Barlos. He was a former president of AEK Athens FC. There are also VIP areas, conference rooms and a museum dedicated to Greek refugees from Asia Minor.

Getting here is easy. The Athens Metro Line 1 has two close stations. They are Perissos and Pefkakia. Several bus and trolleybus routes also serve the stadium.
