Can you imagine majestic Irish Draught horses patrolling Dublin’s streets? That’s the reality of the Garda Mounted Unit. Based in the Phoenix Park their stables are actually located at Áras an Uachtaráin not Garda Headquarters. This unique unit is far more than just a pretty sight.

The Garda Mounted Unit didn’t always exist in its current form. It has a rich history drawing from predecessors like the Dublin Horse Police and the Royal Irish Constabulary. It officially formed in 1998. Interestingly the horses and equipment came from the disbanded North Yorkshire Police mounted unit. The unit became operational on May 17 1998.

The unit isn’t just for show. It plays a crucial role in community policing. Think high visibility patrols deterring crime. They’re also key during large events like the Dublin St Patrick’s Day parade. Their presence helps manage crowds ensuring safety and a positive atmosphere. The Garda Mounted Unit also has a surprising role in searching for missing persons particularly in hard-to-reach areas. Their horses can access terrain inaccessible to vehicles or even on foot.

The unit’s strength is impressive. Two Sergeants lead sixteen Gardaí. Fourteen horses are currently in use with plans to add a fifteenth. They maintain a strong presence at large public gatherings. These include sporting events concerts and even the Ballinasloe Horse Fair. The Dublin Horse Show at the RDS and the National Ploughing Championships also see the unit’s participation.

The Garda Mounted Unit is more than a police unit. It’s a symbol of Dublin’s unique blend of tradition and modern policing. It’s a powerful reminder that some of the oldest methods remain effective even in today’s world. Their work ensures safety and peace of mind for everyone they serve. Their presence is a testament to their commitment to the city’s well-being. Their legacy is etched into the very fabric of Dublin.
