High above Erfurt’s Domplatz stands St Mary’s Cathedral a majestic testament to faith and history. This isn’t just any church. It’s the largest and oldest church in Thuringia. For centuries its towering spires have watched over the city.

Imagine the scene in 1184. King Henry VI summoned a gathering. The Erfurt latrine disaster unfolded. A floor collapsed. About 60 people perished in the filth below. This tragic event occurred right where we stand. Think of the nobles the commoners all lost in such a gruesome manner.

St Mary’s Cathedral has seen it all. From the Romanesque basilica built on this very spot in the 12th century. To the Gothic masterpiece we see today. The building has gone through many transformations. The site has always been sacred.

Martin Luther himself was ordained within these hallowed walls on April 3 1507. Can you imagine the young Luther? Here in St Mary’s he took his first steps towards a religious revolution. He later sparked the Protestant Reformation. He forever changed Christianity.

The cathedral boasts incredible treasures. The Maria Gloriosa bell hangs in the central tower. When cast in 1497 it was the world’s largest free-swinging bell. It remains the largest surviving medieval bell. Its pure tone has echoed through the centuries.

Other treasures include the tomb of the bigamous Count von Gleichen. He’s buried here with both his wives. There is a stucco altar from around 1160. The Erfurter Wolfram a bronze candelabra stands as the oldest free-standing cast work in Germany. Statues of the Wise and Foolish Virgins grace the portal.

The architecture is breathtaking. The Gothic style is prominent. It’s a blend of styles from the 14th and 15th centuries. Stained glass windows shimmer. The interior furnishings are rich. This is more than a building. It is a vibrant history book.

Erfurt Cathedral St Mary’s Cathedral stands as a living monument. It has survived centuries of change. It has witnessed history’s grand sweep. It continues to inspire awe and wonder. It’s a place where faith history and art intertwine. It is a must-see destination in Erfurt.
