“A church resurrected from ashes.” That’s the story of Sankt Kilian in Erfurt. It stands before you, not as a relic of defeat, but as a testament to the enduring spirit of Gispersleben. Sankt Kilian isn’t just a building. It’s a thread woven into the very fabric of this community. Its first documented mention dates back to 1143, recorded in the annals of the Petersberg Monastery in Erfurt as “Kiliani-Gisbodisleybin”. Imagine a time when this church, dedicated to Saint Kilian, belonged to the diocese of Mainz, alongside the Peterskloster and Erfurt itself. In 1375, a significant transfer took place. Heinrich Beyer zu Boppard, the Domdekan of the Archbishop of Mainz, entrusted Sankt Kilian to Priest Gunther von Wyhe. Now, fast forward to 1733. A devastating fire swept through Gispersleben, leaving destruction in its wake. Yet, from the ashes, Sankt Kilian rose again. The tower, a beacon of hope, was erected in 1744. The nave, with its double gallery where voices once echoed in prayer, was completed in 1792. Just a couple of years later, in 1794, the late Baroque altar, a masterpiece of artistry, was installed. And then, in 1803, the Hesse organ, with its original facade still preserved, filled the church with its majestic sound. Sankt Kilian continued to evolve. In 1833, the altar area was extended, creating an apse that added to the church’s grandeur. The year 1950 marked another turning point, as Gispersleben became part of Erfurt. Later, during the GDR era, a large housing estate was built near Sankt Kilian. The church community embraced these new residents. In 1980, construction began on the Martin-Niemöller-Haus, a community center named after the courageous pastor. It was completed in 1982, a testament to the resilience and faith of the community. Finally, in 1998, the Viti and Kiliani congregations merged, further strengthening the bonds of faith in Gispersleben. Sankt Kilian, a witness to history, a symbol of resilience, and a vibrant center of community.
