“Born in 978 Ibn Abd al-Barr lived a long and impactful life. I want to tell you about Ibn Abd al-Barr a scholar of great importance. He was born Yusuf ibn Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Barr al-Namari. He became known simply as Ibn Abd al-Barr. Ibn Abd al-Barr was a Maliki scholar from the eleventh century. He was also an Athari theologian. He even served as the Qadi of Lisbon.
Ibn Abd al-Barr lived to the age of 93 dying on December 2 1071. He passed away in Xativa in Al-Andalus. Ibn Khallikan tells us Ibn Abd al-Barr came from the Arabian tribe of Namr ibn Qasit.
Initially Ibn Abd al-Barr followed the Zahirite school of Muslim jurisprudence. Later he switched to the Maliki school. This was the official legal code of the Umayyad dynasty. Ibn Abd al-Barr’s book focused on three great Sunni jurists. They were Malik ibn Anas Al-Shafi’i and Abu Hanifa. Notably he excluded Dawud al-Zahiri and Ahmad ibn Hanbal. Ibn Abd al-Barr strongly opposed Taqlid or blind imitation. He represented the traditionalist side of the Maliki school. Some call him the “Bukhari of the West.”
Let’s consider some of Ibn Abd al-Barr’s works. There is “The Comprehensive Compilation of the Names of the Prophet’s Companions”. It aimed to list everyone who met Muhammad even once. He also wrote “Al-Ajwiba al-Mu’iba” meaning “The Comprehensive Answers”. Another work is “Al-‘Aql wal-‘Uqala'” or “Reason and the People of Wisdom”.

Ibn Abd al-Barr is also credited with “Al-Insaf fi Asma’ Allah” “The Book of Fidelity On the Names of Allah”. There is also “Al-Intiqa’ fi Fada’il al-Thalathat al-A’immat al-Fuqaha’ Malik wal-Shafi’i wa Abi Hanifa”. This translates to “The Hand-Picked Excellent Merits of the Three Great Jurisprudent Imams Malik Shafi’i and Abu Hanifa”.
Another key work is “Al-Istidhkar li Madhhab ‘Ulama’ al-Amsar fiima Tadammanahu al-Muwatta’ min Ma’ani al-Ra’i wal-Athar”. This means “The Memorization of the Doctrine of the Scholars of the World Concerning the Juridical Opinions and the Narrations Found in Malik’s Muwatta'”. Another important contribution is “Jami’ Bayan al-‘Ilmi wa-Fadlihi wama Yanbaghi fi Riwayatihi wa Hamlih”. This is a “Compendium Exposing the Nature of Knowledge and Its Immense Merit and What is Required in the Process of Narrating it and Conveying it”.
Ibn Abd al-Barr also composed “Al-Kafi fi Madhhab Malik” which means “The Sufficiency in Malik’s School of Jurisprudence”. He wrote “Al-Kuna” “The Patronyms” and “Al-Maghazi” “The Battles”. Also among his works is “Al-Qasd wal-Umam fi Nasab al-‘Arab wal-‘Ajam” or “The Endeavors and the Nations Genealogies of the Arabs and Non-Arabs”.
