Ever wondered about Berlin’s oldest public transport? Right before you stands the Historische Straßenbahn a testament to Berlin’s rich transit history.

The Historische Straßenbahn isn’t just a collection of old trams. It represents over a century of innovation and evolution. Berlin’s public transport story began in 1865 with horse-drawn trams. These early horse-drawn carriages chugged along from the Brandenburg Gate to Charlottenburg.

But Berlin’s ambition soared. In 1881 Groß-Lichterfelde a Berlin district since 1920 witnessed a world first. Werner von Siemens unveiled the world’s first electric tram. This wasn’t just a novelty. It marked a significant step toward modern urban transport. Siemens initially envisioned an electric elevated railway system. He used the Lichterfelde tram as a demonstration. The initial system was unique. Power ran through the tracks requiring a fence for safety. A single ride cost more than a day’s wages for many.

The transition to electric trams wasn’t immediate. Technical challenges and skepticism from authorities slowed the process. Accuulator trams were experimented with before overhead lines became the standard. By 1901 all lines ran on electricity. Imagine the sight of those majestic horses replaced by the hum of electric motors. The switch, however, left many horses jobless. They were sold off at auctions.

Berlin’s tram network expanded dramatically. By 1930 it boasted over 630 kilometers of track with more than 90 lines in operation. This vast network connected all corners of the city. The many different tram companies eventually merged into the BVG in 1929. This simplified fares and operations.

World War II brought disruption. The tram system suffered damage. Post-war Berlin saw the network split into East and West operations. West Berlin abandoned trams entirely by 1967. East Berlin however continued to use its tram network. New lines were even built to serve growing suburbs. The tram’s resilience continued even through the political division of the city.

Today the Historische Straßenbahn brings this remarkable history to life. It allows visitors to experience the craftsmanship and technology of these iconic vehicles. You are looking at more than just old trams. You’re looking at the heart of Berlin’s journey through transportation. It showcases Berlin’s innovative spirit and its enduring connection to its past. Step aboard and journey back in time.
