Welcome to the Tuniberg a unique wine-growing area near Freiburg. It is known as the vineyard of Freiburg. The Tuniberg stands like an island between the Black Forest and the Vosges. This hill rises roughly 100 meters above the Rhine plain.

Viticulture has thrived here for millennia. It blossomed especially in the 1970s. Since then local winemakers started to create their own wines. They promote grape and wine quality. They want to make the Tuniberg known beyond Baden’s borders. It is truly a Burgunder oasis.

The Tuniberg enjoys a warm climate. It is one of Germany’s sunniest areas. Sunshine lasts from 1,350 to 1,400 hours during the growing season. The yearly precipitation ranges between 700 and 750 mm/m2. The soil consists of loess and clay.

The Tuniberg wine region produces elegant white and red wines from local grape varieties. White wine varieties include Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Blanc. The red wine growing area covers about 600 hectares. Pinot Noir is the main red wine grape. It takes up almost 90% of the vineyards. This wine is beautifully structured. Its tannins create a strong foundation. You will taste cinnamon and cherries. Earthy beetroot and a dash of vanilla follow.

The landscape features rose-adorned vineyards and charming villages. It also has idyllic gardens. Many people come here for Nordic walking, cycling, and hiking. The Tuniberg-Höhenweg offers stunning views. You can see the Black Forest, the Vosges, the Kaiserstuhl, and Freiburg.

Each area in the Tuniberg region has its own unique attractions. Visit the Baroque cathedral in Merdingen. Explore the castles and Stone Age finds in Munzingen. Climb the observation tower in Opfingen. The chapel of Er-Trudis offers unrivaled views. See the Rhine valley and the peaks of the Black Forest and the Vosges Mountains.

Thematic trails and wine trails guide you through the Rebland. These trails pass through various hiking routes. They connect with the Burgundy Trail.

Since the 1990s, winemakers here farm their grapes according to environmentally friendly practices. They largely avoid using pesticides. They maintain a permanently green vineyard area. They contribute to preserving nature and the landscape. Numerous awards prove the exceptional quality of Tuniberg wines.

The Tuniberg is a highly praised sub-region of Baden. It is known for its diverse and eminent wines. The climate, soil, and winemaking techniques create a unique style. The wines are unforgettable.
