Doesn’t the name Sowmya Damodara Perumal Temple just roll off the tongue? This ancient temple is over 650 years old. It stands proudly in Villivakkam Chennai. This is one of the few temples dedicated to Lord Krishna as Damodaran.
The Sowmya Damodara Perumal Temple is a vibrant testament to Chennai’s rich cultural tapestry. It has stood for centuries. Rulers contributed to its growth. The surrounding area was once known as Konnur. Sage Agasthya killed two demons here. Their names were Ilvalan and Vatapi. Hence, the name Konnur.
Why Sowmya Damodaran? Sowmya means beautiful. It refers to Krishna’s captivating appearance. As a child in Gokulam Yashoda tied Krishna to a grinding stone. This stone is called “ural”. Tying him this way, she called him Damodaran. Damodaran is one of the twelve sacred names of Lord Narayana.
Look closely at the Moolavar deity. Notice the scar on his stomach. This is from the rope Yasodha used to tie him. Devotees believe praying here grants blessings for Puthrabaakyam. This is a blessing for children.
Amirthavalli Thayar the Goddess resides in a separate shrine. It is to the right of the sanctum. Her kindness is immeasurable. Shrines also exist for Rama Krishna Andal Anjaneya and the Azhwars.

Throughout the year Sowmya Damodara Perumal Temple hosts many festivals. Brahmotsavam occurs in the Tamil month of Vaikasi which is between May and June.
Interestingly British Governors once sponsored temple festivals. Their representatives even participated. A Hindu representative received honors here.
