Rising 175 feet above Lexington Avenue the dome of St. Jean Baptiste Church punctuates the New York City skyline. This magnificent church stands as a testament to faith and architectural grandeur. Today we will delve into the history and beauty of St. Jean Baptiste Church.
St. Jean Baptiste Church began humbly. It started as a mission parish for French Canadians in 1882. Imagine worshiping in a rented hall above a stable. The sounds of animals and the scent of hay filled the air. It was picturesquely called the Crib of Bethlehem.
The early parishioners faced many challenges. Despite the humble setting the community thrived. They transformed the hall each week cleaning and decorating it for Mass. Their dedication led to official recognition and the construction of a proper church.
The current St. Jean Baptiste Church is actually the third house of worship for the parish. Construction on this Italian Renaissance Revival masterpiece began in 1911. Nicholas Serracino an Italian architect designed it. His design had won first prize at the International Exhibit in Turin Italy. Thomas Fortune Ryan provided the funding. The lower church opened in 1913 and the upper church was dedicated in 1914.
Step inside and prepare to be amazed. The interior is lavishly decorated in the Italian Renaissance style. Green marble columns line the nave. Intricately carved confessionals and mosaic Stations of the Cross adorn the aisles. Stained-glass windows filter light into the sanctuary. These stained-glass windows were produced by workshops in Chartres France. St. Jean Baptiste is one of only two churches in New York City with this distinction. The other is St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
Look up to see the barrel vault over the nave. Coffers painted with cloud-filled skies lead the eye toward the dome. The high altar gleams in white marble. Mosaics and gilded carvings adorn the apse.
St. Jean Baptiste Church has undergone many restorations. West New York Restoration has worked on the building since 1987. They replaced the roofs refurbished the stained-glass windows and restored the towers.
Today St. Jean Baptiste Church is more than just a beautiful building. It is a vibrant community hub. It has a high school which was founded in 1929. The Saint Jean’s Players offer live theater. The church also hosts concerts under the dome. The Music Under the Dome program showcases world-class musicians.
