The ancient stones of Sankt Martini whisper secrets. They speak of a church existing perhaps as early as the 11th century. But our story truly begins in 1265. That’s when Sankt Martini first appeared in official records. Imagine a bustling Erfurt. This wasn’t some remote village church. Sankt Martini stood in the heart of the city.

For centuries Sankt Martini served not only as a parish church but also as the convent church for the Cistercian nuns of Mariengarten. Their convent stood right next to the church. This wasn’t just a religious center. It was a community. The nuns lived and worshipped within these walls. Their lives intertwined with the townspeople’s.

Sadly in 1472 disaster struck. A devastating fire consumed Sankt Martini. Only the mighty Gothic tower survived. This tower stands as a testament to the resilience of the community. Its bell cast in 1419 still rings today.

The rebuilding took a decade. The church rose again. Its Gothic windows and sacristy entrance are a reminder of this era. Later between 1755 and 1758 the church underwent a significant Baroque transformation. This wasn’t just a simple renovation. The whole building was reshaped. The exterior adopted the elegant lines of the Baroque style. The interior retained its older Rococo charm. Today you can see evidence of this remarkable architectural journey. The Baroque exterior contrasts beautifully with the delicate Rococo interior.

Sankt Martini has witnessed history unfold. It survived the Thirty Years’ War. It endured the secularization of 1819 losing its convent status. It stood as a testament to faith during the turbulent times of the DDR. Today Sankt Martini is once again a vibrant place of worship. It is a subsidiary church of the parish of St Lawrence. Yet it maintains a unique identity.

It hosts not only Catholic services but also services for the Ukrainian Catholic community of Thuringia. This reflects the church’s embracing spirit. It welcomes all.

In the summer months after Sunday mass the courtyard opens. A friendly chat is a common sight. The spirit of Sankt Martini extends beyond the walls. The community gathers. It is a meeting place where stories are shared. This is more than a church. It is a living heart of faith. It is an enduring symbol of Erfurt’s resilience and its spiritual identity.
