Inscribed in the cold, hard stone before you is a tale about the 千宗旦居士遺跡 今日庵 Stele. This stele marks the site of the Konnichi-an, the tea room that represents the very heart of the Urasenke school of Japanese tea ceremony. Right here, in this tranquil space, history and tradition intertwine to tell a story of family legacy and the enduring power of tea. The Konnichi-an, meaning “Hut of This Day,” wasn’t always located here. It was originally built by Sen Sōtan, grandson of the legendary tea master Sen no Rikyū. He chose a spot on the north side of the Sen family residence. Years later, the tea room found a new home here, forever linked to the legacy of Sen no Rikyū and the Urasenke school. Although the original tea room is no longer standing, the 千宗旦居士遺跡 今日庵 Stele serves as a poignant reminder of its presence. It whispers tales of tea ceremonies past, echoing with the wisdom of generations. The stele stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Japanese tea ceremony, inviting you to appreciate the serenity and beauty found in every cup.
