The school’s history links back to the aftermath of the South African War. In 1902, there was a need for schools in Transvaal. The Milner Administration found a vacant cigar factory. This marked the beginning of what would become King Edward VII School.

Growth led the school to Barnato Park in 1904. It was housed in a mansion designed for Barney Barnato. At this location, it was known as Johannesburg College. The school moved again in 1911. It found its final home on Houghton Ridge. These buildings were specially designed for the school.

The move coincided with the founding of the Union of South Africa. It also coincided with the death of King Edward VII. The school was granted the right to change its name. It became King Edward VII School to honor the late king.

King Edward VII Preparatory School is adjacent to the High School. It caters for boys from Grade 0 to Grade 7. The school offers excellent facilities.
