“Can you feel it?” I asked, sweeping my arm towards the Torre des Pi des Català. “The weight of history, settling on this windswept hill?” The Torre des Pi des Català stands as a silent sentinel, a testament to Formentera’s strategic importance in centuries past. Built between 1762 and 1763, this tower, like the other defense towers of Formentera, was commissioned by Captain General Francisco de Paula Bucarelli y Ursúa and designed by military engineer José García Martínez. Its purpose was twofold: defense against invaders and surveillance of the surrounding waters. Interestingly, of the four towers on Formentera, the Torre des Pi des Català sits furthest inland. This unique positioning is due to the specific terrain of this part of the island. Observe its frustoconical shape, a design common to Formentera’s defense towers. Originally, the tower boasted two floors and a rooftop access leading to a sentry box and parapet. The main entrance, as you can see, is on the first floor. This elevated entry point provided a defensive advantage, making it harder for attackers to breach. Notice, however, the ground-level opening. This wasn’t part of the original design. It was added sometime in the 20th century and, following the tower’s restoration, was converted into a second access point. This makes Torre des Pi des Català the only tower on the island accessible to visitors. Inside, the ground floor once housed a powder magazine and a larger room connected by a stone staircase to the main room above. Imagine the soldiers stationed here, their footsteps echoing on these very stones, ever watchful for approaching ships. The restoration work completed in 2016 was meticulous, focusing on preserving the tower’s original character. Local sandstone similar to the original material was used, yet placed slightly offset, allowing the weathered patina of the original stones to tell their own story. The addition of Corten steel elements, used for modern carpentry and protection, further highlights the contrast between old and new. Now, as you ascend the spiral staircase to the rooftop platform, remember the “garita,” the small watchtower that once stood here, shielding the soldiers as they manned the “matacán,” a defensive overhang. From this vantage point, they scanned the horizon, guardians of Formentera’s shores. Feel the wind, the same wind that filled the sails of friend and foe alike, and imagine the lives lived and the stories whispered within these ancient walls.
