Did you ever hear of a church that changed religions? St Albert’s RC Church in Pollokshields has a fascinating story. It began as the Stockwell Free Church in 1886. Designed by John B Wilson, this stunning Italian Renaissance structure, with its Corinthian columns and towering bell tower, was originally a Presbyterian church. St Albert’s RC Church, located at 153 Albert Drive, boasts a rich history. Imagine the grandeur of the original mosaic floor, the panelled gallery, and the decorative roof tie beams. These features still grace the interior today. In 1965, the Catholic Archdiocese purchased the church. They established a new parish and opened St Albert’s RC Church in 1967. The transformation was remarkably subtle. The Presbyterian platform was raised to create a chancel. A new altar, pulpit, and lectern were installed under a canopy. Remarkably, the original pews and raked galleries from the Free Church era remain. St Albert’s RC Church stands as a testament to its dual heritage. It beautifully blends its Presbyterian origins with its Catholic present. This unique history makes it a truly remarkable landmark in Glasgow.
