Ever felt the hum of a city’s pulse? Right here at Gwangmyeong IC you can. This isn’t just a motorway junction. It’s a gateway a crossroads. Gwangmyeong IC connects you to the bustling heart of Gwangmyeong City. A city that once lay on the edge of Seoul now thrives with its own identity.

Imagine this. Before Gwangmyeong was its own city it was part of Siheung County. It shared its history with Yeongdeungpo Guro and Geumcheon areas. In 1914 the area was merged into an expanded Siheung County. This is a little known fact.

Then in 1963 things changed dramatically. A northern section of Gwangmyeong was annexed into Seoul. It wasn’t the whole city just a part. This was all part of urban planning. Gwangmyeong-dong and Cheolsan-dong neighborhoods grew. They became residential zones close to Seoul. A planned administrative merger with Seoul was envisioned.

But that never happened. Seoul’s unexpected rapid growth scared government officials. In 1981 the annexation plan failed. Instead the county branch of Gwangmyeong and Soha town merged. Gwangmyeong became its own city.

The 1980s and early 1990s saw a population boom. Apartment complexes sprang up in Cheolsan-dong and Haan-dong. Gwangmyeong’s population soared. Then in 1995 there were more boundary adjustments. A small part of Cheolsan-dong was transferred to Seoul’s newly formed Geumcheon District. A constant negotiation and rearrangement were taking place.

Today Gwangmyeong IC stands as a symbol. It shows the dynamic history of Gwangmyeong. It represents the city’s unique position. A commuter town near Seoul yet with a strong sense of independence. This junction links Gwangmyeong to the wider world and reflects its vibrant present. It’s a reminder of the city’s perseverance and growth. It’s more than just a road it’s a story.
