“Ever wondered where Bengali culture thrives in the heart of Delhi?” I ask you as we approach the New Delhi Kali Bari. This Hindu temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali. It is a vibrant center for Bengali culture right here in New Delhi.

Established in the 1930s, the Kalibari stands on Mandir Marg. It is conveniently located near the Laxminarayan Temple, also known as Birla Mandir.

Let’s take a quick journey back in time. The growing Bengali community in Delhi needed a place to worship and connect. After years of requests, they were granted land on Mandir Marg. This was next to the already famous Laxminarayan Temple. Soon after, this Kali Bari temple emerged. It had an idol that resembled the one at the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata.

The mandir committee was officially formed in 1935. A notable figure, Subhas Chandra Bose, served as its first president. Sir Justice Manmatha Nath Mukherjee inaugurated the first Mandir Building. Over time, a building for visitors and guests was added. Bengali tourists can book rooms here. Imagine that. You can stay within the temple grounds. The Delhi Kalibari also houses an old library. It is full of knowledge and history.

Now, let’s talk about Durga Puja. The Durga Puja celebrated here is among the oldest in Delhi. Its roots go back to 1925. Originally, the Kali Bari was on Baird Road. That’s today’s Bangla Sahib Road. The local Bengali community gathered there for Durga Puja. After 1931, the temple moved here. To this day, it remains a central point for numerous Puja committees in Delhi. Delhi Bengalis widely revere it. Only a few pujas are older. These are at Kashmere Gate and Timarpur.

The puja celebration at Kali Bari maintains its traditional style. It features traditional ekchalar thakur. That means a single frame for idols. Sholar kaaj is another traditional element. The puja rituals have remained unchanged since 1936. Traditional competitions in Rabindra sangeet and recitation still take place. Currently, Mr. Swapan Kumar Chakraborty is the president of Delhi Kalibari. Artisans from Kolkata come here to build the puja pandal.

The temple is located west of Connaught Place. Getting here is easy. You can take local buses, taxis, or auto-rickshaws. The nearest Delhi Metro station is R.K. Ashram Marg. It’s about 2 km away.

Entering the New Delhi Kali Bari evokes a sense of mental peace. Many say that the Murti of Kali Maa is mesmerizing. Just look into the Kali Maa Idol. You might feel a divine presence. The Kali puja here follows traditional styles. The rituals have remained consistent over the years. Artisans and decorators from Kolkata still construct the puja pandal.

As you leave, remember the words of Rabindranath Tagore. He wrote a poem about Maa Kali. In it, he speaks of seeing the world. Yet, missing the beauty right at home. A reminder that sometimes the divine is closest to us. The New Delhi Kali Bari is more than a temple. It is a testament to faith, culture, and community.
