Grave whisperings echo in the wind. We stand before Friedhofskapelle Bergstedt. This chapel offers solace and reflection. It is a place where memories linger.

Friedhof Bergstedt began long ago. In the 12th century the Bergstedt church was built. The dead were buried in its churchyard. By the 19th century the churchyard was too small. In the 1860s a larger area was acquired. It was across from Bergstedter Chaussee. Burials began here in June 1864. No more burials occurred at the churchyard after that.

The Friedhofskapelle Bergstedt was not built until 1911. A mortuary was added in 1928. The cemetery expanded several times. This happened especially in 1935 and 1947. Now it covers about 15 hectares. Around 15000 graves exist here.

The chapel was rebuilt in the mid-1950s. Architect Walter Ahrendt designed the new building. It was dedicated in 1957. Modernizations occurred in 1987 and 2004. The main hall can hold about 200 people. An addition in 2008 provides space for 40 more. The administration offices are next to this addition.

Note the large five-part stained glass window. Hanno Edelmann created it during the modernization in 1987. It shows the resurrected Christ floating with angels. Below them is a crowd of people. They gaze in wonder. Greenish-blue tones dominate the window. The people at the bottom have bright yellows oranges and reds.

There are three entrances to Friedhof Bergstedt. One is from Bergstedter Chaussee near the bus stop. Another is from Volksdorfer Damm. The third is from Osterkampstieg where the parking is.

You can choose different burial options here. There are earth and urn graves. Also there are various communal urn graves. Some gravesites and the chapel are protected historical landmarks. These include the Beisser Henneberg and Schiefler sites.

Many notable people are buried here. They include Hermine Albers a social scientist and Egon Backhaus a geologist. Anne-Eva Brauneck a criminal lawyer and Hans Fahning an economist are also buried here. Ludwig Frahm a Low German author rests here too.

The Friedhofskapelle Bergstedt stands as a serene landmark. It embodies history art and remembrance. Take a moment to appreciate its peaceful presence. Remember those who found their final rest here.
