“This mosque feels different,” you might be thinking. You’re right in front of the Orta Camii in Ankara. This isn’t just any mosque. This is a building that whispers tales of powerful rulers, shifting political sands, and architectural wonders. The Orta Camii, also known as the Etmeydan Camii or Ahmediye Camii, has seen a lot in its time. Imagine, if you will, Ankara in 1527. The Ottoman Empire is at its zenith, ruled by the mighty Suleiman the Magnificent. It was during this time that the Orta Camii was first erected, a symbol of faith nestled in the heart of the bustling city.

The original mosque, sadly, is gone. It was likely destroyed in a fire in 1918. But from its ashes rose a new Orta Camii, the one you see before you today. This reincarnation, completed in 1913, stands as a testament to Ankara’s resilience. The new mosque boasts a unique blend of architectural styles, a harmonious fusion of old and new.

Look around. Notice the octagonal shape of the building, a distinct feature that sets it apart from many other mosques. Now, lift your gaze to the dome. Made of wood, it represents a simpler time, a stark contrast to the grandeur often associated with Ottoman architecture. Step inside and you’ll find yourself surrounded by intricate woodwork. The pulpit, the mihrab, the women’s balcony – all adorned with beautiful, delicate carvings. These intricate details offer a glimpse into the craftsmanship of a bygone era.

But the Orta Camii’s story isn’t just about aesthetics. This mosque played a pivotal role in one of the most tumultuous events in Ottoman history – the deposition of Sultan Osman II. In 1622, the Janissaries, the empire’s elite soldiers, rebelled. Sultan Osman II, seeking refuge, was brought to the Orta Camii. Sadly, his sanctuary was short-lived. He was later murdered, marking a bloody turning point in Ottoman history.

The Orta Camii’s story, much like Ankara itself, is a tapestry woven from threads of faith, power, and resilience. As you leave this peaceful haven and step back into the bustle of the city, carry with you a sense of the history you’ve witnessed.
