“Bold change is beginning” This was the slogan of The People’s Party. A centrist party it aimed for significant government change.

The People’s Party emerged in South Korea in 2016. Its founder was Ahn Cheol-soo. He had previously been involved in the Democratic Party of Korea. A power struggle led to his departure. Ahn then vowed to create a new political force.

The People’s Party officially launched on February 2 2016. Seventeen lawmakers joined the National Assembly. They quickly gained support. By March 2016 they had twenty members. This gave them important rights. They could now form a negotiation bloc. Increased state subsidies followed.

The 2016 legislative election was a success for The People’s Party. They aimed for twenty seats. They won thirty-eight. Twenty-three of these were in the Honam region. This area was traditionally a stronghold for the Democratic Party.

The People’s Party’s success surprised many. It became a major player in South Korean politics. Their influence was significant. They held a potentially deciding vote on legislation. However internal problems followed.

A corruption scandal impacted the party. In June 2016 several members faced accusations. They were accused of receiving kickbacks. This involved PR agencies and forged contracts. Ahn Cheol-soo resigned as chairman. Chun Jung-bae also stepped down. The party’s future looked uncertain.

Despite this setback The People’s Party persisted. Ahn Cheol-soo returned as chairman in August 2017. The party continued its work. However the next year a merger changed everything.

In early 2018 The People’s Party merged with the Bareun Party. This created a larger centrist bloc. This strengthened their parliamentary position. The merger was controversial. Some lawmakers disagreed. They left forming a new party called the Party for Democracy and Peace.

The People’s Party’s legacy is complex. Its short lifespan ended in 2018. However its impact was notable. It showed the potential for a centrist party in South Korea. It also highlighted the challenges of navigating internal conflicts and corruption accusations. The People’s Party was a brief but significant chapter in South Korean political history.
