Have you ever wondered what a palace looks like floating on water? At Lake Palace Viewpoint, you can witness this magical sight. Jal Mahal, the “Water Palace,” rises from the center of Man Sagar Lake. It’s a beautiful blend of Rajput and Mughal architecture. Maharaja Jai Singh II of Amber renovated and expanded the palace and lake in the 18th century. Originally, the palace served as a hunting lodge for the Maharaja and his entourage. It was never meant to be a permanent residence. The palace is a five-storied structure. Four of these floors submerge when the lake is full, creating the illusion that it’s floating. Red sandstone walls, intricate carvings, and delicate jharokhas (overhanging balconies) adorn the exterior. Chhatris, elevated dome-shaped pavilions, mark the corners of the terrace. These elements add a regal touch. The palace’s reflection in the serene water is stunning, especially at sunrise and sunset. While the interior isn’t open to the public, it’s said to contain ornate halls and chambers. Frescoes and marble work embellish these spaces. The lake itself has an interesting history. It started as a natural depression where water collected. During a severe famine in 1596 AD, a dam was built to store water. This dam, now made of stone masonry, is about 300 meters long and 28.5-34.5 meters wide. The lake and surrounding area now form a vital ecological zone, home to many bird species. In the past, the lake and palace suffered from neglect. However, a major restoration project in the early 2000s brought them back to their former glory. This involved cleaning the lake, reviving the local ecology, and restoring the palace structure. So, take a moment to soak in the beauty of Jal Mahal from Lake Palace Viewpoint. It’s a truly memorable sight.
