Perhaps the most captivating aspect of Nishin Nyorai-ji Temple is its history dating back to 899. Sugawara no Michizane served as the Right Minister from Emperor Uda. He painted a picture to celebrate his appointment. This painting is enshrined as the temple’s deity.

Nishin Nyorai-ji Temple stands in Kyoto. It is a Jodo Shinshu temple. The temple belongs to the Otani branch. Honzan is Hongwanji. Shinran Shonin is the founder. Nakamuramotoro Kunirokuro from Yamashina founded it. He was a local samurai from Yamashina. His family was connected to Miyazumibe no Sukune family who were lords of Uji. The temple grounds may be related to Gyozenji Temple. The current main hall was built in 1992.

The temple is also known as “Doutoku-san no Otera”. Doutoku was a disciple of Rennyo Shonin. Rennyo was the eighth head priest. Doutoku founded the temple.

The temple is closely tied to Rennyo Shonin. “Rennyo Shonin Goikkuikimon” contains Doutoku’s words. The words say Doutoku founded Gyozenji Temple. Doutoku met Rennyo on January 1, 1470. The temple’s teachings are cherished by Shinshu followers.

In 2016 the temple’s “Nehanzu” was designated an important cultural property. It is a stunning piece measuring approximately 172.5 cm by 207.7 cm. After its designation the “Nehanzu” underwent extensive restoration for four years.
