Delve into a world of miniature art and historical narratives at the Chiang Mai Philatelic Museum. This museum isn’t just a collection of stamps. It is a journey through Thailand’s postal past.

The Chiang Mai Philatelic Museum stands on Praisanee Road. It occupies the site of the old post office. This building has a story of its own. It was once the Monthon Payaap Court before becoming Chiang Mai’s first Post and Telegraph Office in 1910. The building got a second story for more space. It was then known as the Mae Ping Post Office.

In 1990, the CAT Telecom Public Company Limited restored it. They transformed it into the Chiang Mai Philatelic Museum. It opened to the public on November 15th, 1990. The ground floor served as a post office until the renovations were complete.

Step inside the Chiang Mai Philatelic Museum. You’ll find four exhibition rooms. The ground floor displays old postal and telegraphic equipment. Imagine the messages sent using these tools. You can also see old photos of the post office. Outside, you can spot old post boxes.

Ascend to the first floor to see the stamp collection. Many of Thailand’s stamps are here. Some date back to Siam’s first series in 1883. These stamps tell tales of kings and significant events.

The museum has stamps of King Rama V. He reigned from 1868 to 1910. He was instrumental in establishing Thailand’s postal service. Prince Bhanurangsri Sawangwongse was appointed the first Director General of the Post Department.

Consider Thailand’s first postage stamp issued on August 4, 1883. It featured King Rama V. Thais called these stamps “Solot”. This was after the stamp’s price in the old currency. On July 1, 1885, Thailand joined the Universal Postal Union. This connected Thailand to the international postal system.

The Chiang Mai Philatelic Museum displays award-winning stamps. You can also find rare pieces never before seen. Kids may be amazed by the old communication equipment. They grew up in the age of smartphones.

The Fine Arts Department recognizes the building as a registered monument. This adds to its historical importance. The Chiang Mai Philatelic Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday. Visit between 9 am and 4 pm. There is no entrance fee.

As you leave the Chiang Mai Philatelic Museum, reflect on the stories these stamps hold. They represent a time before instant communication. These stamps are little windows into Thailand’s past.
