In 1750, Valentin Reincke built a place that would become a Frankfurt institution. He called it Gasthaus Zur Sonne. It stands on Berger Straße 312, right here in Bornheim. Reincke also owned the neighboring Gasthaus “Zur alten Sonne,” now Berger Straße 314. Gasthaus Zur Sonne officially opened its doors in 1768. Shortly after, its neighbor became Bornheim’s town hall. From its beginnings, Gasthaus Zur Sonne has welcomed people from all walks of life. For over 250 years, young and old have gathered here. They’ve enjoyed the summer garden and sought warmth in the cozy winter rooms. Gasthaus Zur Sonne has become more than just a place to eat and drink. It’s a vital part of Frankfurt’s history. It represents the heart of the city where everyone, rich or poor, young or old, could come together. In 1912, Adolf Stoltze captured the essence of places like Gasthaus Zur Sonne. He described a scene of people packed together, enjoying food, drink, conversation, and song. He noted that all classes were represented, a true mix of Frankfurt society. Today, Gasthaus Zur Sonne still offers traditional fare like apple wine and home-style cooking. It features a cozy “Stube” with a bar, a separate dining room, and a large beer garden. It continues to be a cherished piece of Frankfurt’s heritage.
