Have you ever seen a building shaped like a golden carp? Right here in Corsico, alongside the Naviglio Grande, sits the Centro Culturale Soka Gakkai. Its unique golden carp shape symbolizes courage and transformation in Buddhist tradition. This modern structure creates a striking contrast with the neighboring restored Cascina Viscontea Guardia di Sopra. The Centro Culturale Soka Gakkai serves as the Milanese branch of the Soka Gakkai Italian Buddhist Institute. It’s a place where peace and dialogue intertwine. The Centro Culturale Soka Gakkai, also known as the Ikeda Center for Peace, is the largest Buddhist complex in Europe. It’s a hub for the Soka Gakkai International, a Nichiren Buddhist organization. The SGI-Italy, as it is often called, has a fascinating history. Active since the late 1970s, it gained official recognition from the Italian government in 2015. This recognition, under Article 8 of the Italian Constitution, allows SGI-Italy to receive taxpayer funding for its religious and social activities. It also grants the organization the right to be consulted by the government and appoint chaplains in the military, hospitals, and jails. Amazingly, la Repubblica reported in 2015 that SGI-Italy represents half of Italy’s Buddhist population. The Centro Culturale Soka Gakkai isn’t just a place of worship. It also hosts public events, exhibitions, and conferences organized by the Comune di Corsico. The complex, built on a vast 40,000 square meter area, incorporates both a revitalized historic farmhouse and the distinctive new main building. Imagine a golden carp shimmering in the sunlight. This image is brought to life by the golden metal cladding of the main building at the Centro Culturale Soka Gakkai, surrounded by reflective pools of water. The interior is just as striking, featuring warm wood paneling and a grand hall with a capacity of 1,000 people. This hall, thermally and acoustically isolated, is accessed through a transparent foyer. The restoration of the historic farmhouse, dating back to the Renaissance, was a meticulous undertaking carried out in close collaboration with Milan’s Soprintendenza. The restoration allows visitors to appreciate the building’s rich history. Intricate bronze window frames add a touch of elegance to the historic structure. The Centro Culturale Soka Gakkai offers a blend of ancient and modern, history and spirituality. It’s a unique testament to the growth and influence of Buddhism in Italy.
