Pause for a moment and consider this: What could inspire a king to dedicate his life to the stars? The answer lies within the story of the Ulugh Beg Observatory.

This observatory stands as a testament to Ulugh Beg’s passion for astronomy. Ulugh Beg was the grandson of the great conqueror Timur. But he chose a different path than his grandfather. He chose the path of science and learning.

In the 15th century, Ulugh Beg ruled Samarkand. He transformed the city into a center of knowledge. Ulugh Beg was skilled in mathematics and astronomy. He gathered the greatest minds of the time. Mathematicians and astronomers came to Samarkand. They came to work at the Ulugh Beg Observatory.

Construction of the Ulugh Beg Observatory began in the 1420s. It was completed around 1428. The Ulugh Beg Observatory became a hub for astronomical discovery. Ulugh Beg invited over 60 mathematicians and astronomers. Jamshid al-Kashi was the first director. After his death, Qadi Zada took over. Ali Qushji was the final director.

The Ulugh Beg Observatory was modeled after the Maragha Observatory. It included the largest quadrant principle device. This device could accurately measure the sun and planets. It helped measure the duration of the year and eclipses. Ulugh Beg’s measurements were incredibly accurate for his time.

Imagine the Ulugh Beg Observatory in its prime. A massive cylinder stood tall against the sky. It had a diameter of 46 meters. The main instrument was the Fakhrī sextant. Its radius was 40.04 meters. It was the largest astronomical instrument of its time. Part of the sextant was underground for stability.

Inside the Ulugh Beg Observatory, scholars worked tirelessly. They observed the stars and planets. They made calculations. Ulugh Beg himself fostered this environment. The Ulugh Beg Observatory was a place of great learning. Teachers taught strictly from memory. Ulugh Beg did not always attend class.

Ulugh Beg’s main work was the Zij-i Sultani. This was a star catalog written in 1437. It listed around 1,000 stars. Ulugh Beg determined the length of the tropical year. His calculation was more accurate than Copernicus’s.

Sadly, the Ulugh Beg Observatory did not last. Ulugh Beg was assassinated by his own son in 1449. The Ulugh Beg Observatory was destroyed. Talented astronomers were driven away.

For centuries, the Ulugh Beg Observatory lay in ruins. In 1908, Russian archaeologist Vassily Vyatkin rediscovered the remains. Today, we can see the foundations and the buried quadrant.

The Ulug Beg Observatory Museum commemorates Ulugh Beg. It contains reproductions of his star charts. It also has astrolabes and a miniature reconstruction of the Ulugh Beg Observatory.

The Ulugh Beg Observatory stands as a symbol. It symbolizes the pursuit of knowledge. It reminds us of a time when Samarkand was a center of scientific discovery. Ulugh Beg’s legacy lives on through his work and this remarkable Ulugh Beg Observatory.
