A colossal pump chugged rhythmically. This is the Sauger IV. Right here in the Hamburg harbor.

The Sauger IV isn’t just a ship. It’s a time capsule a testament to Hamburg’s maritime past. Built in 1909 by the Lübecker Maschinenbau AG this dredging vessel played a crucial role in shaping the city’s harbor. Imagine the sheer power. A triple-expansion steam engine churning out 720 horsepower. That’s enough to move mountains of earth literally.

The Sauger IV wasn’t just any dredging vessel. It was a floating powerhouse. Its main job was removing dredged material. It used a giant centrifugal pump with a 1.85-meter diameter impeller. A second smaller steam engine powered a supplementary water pump. Initially fueled by coal it was upgraded in 1967-68 to oil. The conversion involved extensive renovations at the Pahl shipyard in Finkenwerder.

Life aboard the Sauger IV wasn’t for the faint of heart. Two seven-man shifts kept the operation running around the clock. Sailors machinists and a stoker worked tirelessly. Imagine the cramped quarters. The onboard living facilities housed thirteen people. A galley two washrooms and toilets were all part of this floating community.

Its journey wasn’t always smooth sailing. Originally named Sauger VI it was later renamed Dradenau then Sauger IV. It served in various locations including Moorfleet Billbrook Schulau Oortkaten and even Holland for a few years. During World War II it played a crucial role in maintaining the harbor. It even survived a minor war damage. In 1952 it mysteriously sank. Possibly due to open portholes. After being salvaged it continued its work until 1989 when it was decommissioned.

Today the Sauger IV is a museum treasure. Restored with love by volunteers it offers a glimpse into the life of a hardworking vessel. Visit the living quarters. Marvel at the steam engines. Hear the tales of those who served on board. This floating museum is a powerful symbol of Hamburg’s history. A relic of a bygone era. A testament to human ingenuity and maritime heritage. The Sauger IV’s legacy continues to fascinate all who visit. It’s a remarkable piece of history. A true marvel of engineering.
