Once a humble gravel pit, now a serene lake. That’s the story of Elsensee. This body of water is located in Berlin’s Mahlsdorf district. Elsensee is part of the Kaulsdorfer lakes group. These also include Butzer See and Habermannsee.

Back in the early 1980s, this area was a hub of activity. Sand and gravel were extracted here. These materials were essential for constructing the new housing estates in Marzahn-Hellersdorf. After the mining stopped, the pit gradually filled with groundwater and rainwater.

Today, Elsensee has transformed into a natural biotope. It boasts a remarkable diversity of plant and animal life. The lake spans 13.27 hectares. It measures 525 meters in length and 275 meters in width.

The owner of Elsensee once envisioned a recreational paradise. They wanted to create a public swimming pool with a water ski facility. Plans have been in the works since 2001. Yet, these dreams remain unfulfilled.

Water quality is a major obstacle. EU standards for bathing water are not met. Rainwater from surrounding streets flows unfiltered into the lake. This introduces pollutants and poses health risks.

The owner is currently engaged in a legal dispute. The dispute is with the State of Berlin. It concerns the permit for rainwater discharge. The crux of the matter is whether the rainwater flows intentionally or only during heavy rainfall. The Land Berlin believes no permit is needed.

The district has rejected the swimming pool plans due to poor water quality. A costly filtration system would be necessary. Neither the Land Berlin nor the owner is willing to shoulder these expenses.

This legal battle is the latest chapter in a long saga. In the late 1990s, the owner bought the gravel pit from the Land Berlin. The intention was to build a water ski facility. A similar facility is already operated on the Ruhlesee near Marienwerder.

Initially, the district supported the idea of a public swimming pool. However, local residents and conservationists raised concerns. They feared the impact on the area’s flora and fauna.

Ultimately, the district shelved the development plan. Concerns remain about the impact on nature. The water quality must be tested and improved.

The Elsensee’s future remains uncertain. Will it become a recreational haven? Or will it remain a tranquil, natural oasis? Only time will tell.
