Senhora da Graça

Could a single key unlock a city’s fate? Here at Senhora da Graça, high on Monte Farinha, such tales were once whispered. Senhora da Graça wasn’t always this tranquil sanctuary. It was once a bustling church in the heart of Porto, a place of solace and hope. This Senhora da Graça held a statue of Saint Sebastian. From his arrow-pierced heart hung a golden key. Legend claimed it belonged to the Porta do Sol, a gate in the Fernandine Wall. The key’s presence on the saint was believed to protect Porto from the plague. This church also housed the Colégio dos Meninos Órfãos de Nossa Senhora da Graça, a home for orphaned boys. The image of Our Lady of Grace herself, a gift from Queen Mafalda, graced the altar. Imagine the vibrant life within these walls. Children’s laughter mixed with the solemn prayers of the faithful. Then, in May 1899, demolition began. The church, its sacred art, and the stories it held began to fade. Most relics vanished without a trace, lost to time. Only the cross survived, finding a new home in the Prado do Repouso cemetery. Look towards the Douro River, and you might glimpse it, a silent witness to Senhora da Graça’s past. The Polytechnic School, now the University of Porto’s Rectorate, rose in its place. The bustling Mercado do Anjo nearby offers a glimpse of what once was. If you look closely, you can almost see the bell tower of Senhora da Graça reaching for the sky, a ghost of Porto’s past.
