“Jesus Sacred Heart”. Does that resonate with you? It is the patron saint of the Catholic Church of Huamdong. This church was established in 1949. Imagine how it might have looked then.

However, its journey involved twists and turns. After its initial establishment, the church faced challenges. It had to navigate a difficult path to reach its current location. The Catholic Church of Huamdong was finally erected in its present location in 1954.

The church rose from the ashes of the Korean War. Construction began in 1963. A renowned architect designed it. It was then dedicated after construction. This was our nation’s first modern church.

The Catholic Church of Huamdong followed Gaehwadong Church by only three years. Most locals may not realize this fact. Huamdong sits on the slope of Namsan Mountain. Because of the steep incline, builders had to create a platform.

They had to build a retaining structure. The photographs from the past show an older form. The entrance now faces the side. The building appears newly elevated from street level.

The main sanctuary is to your right. The new annex is on the left. It gives the illusion of embracing the church. Although the church is in an obscure position, the architect cleverly designed the building. The building occupies the land efficiently.

Let us step inside the Catholic Church of Huamdong. Once inside, one can see its unique architectural features. The ceiling’s exposed concrete beams create a solemn atmosphere. Light filters through the gaps.

The windows line the sides of the ceiling. The interior design incorporates the surrounding features. Architect Nasanjin placed the church building to the side. He created a two-story complex with a first-floor utility room. The sanctuary occupies the second floor. He positioned the entrance stairs facing the building. This maximizes the land.

At the end of the third floor, we can confirm the Catholic lettering. We can also view the Sacred Heart statue.

The interior feels like a gymnasium. However, the ceiling design is unique. Girders are exposed creating a solemn space. Natural light flows through the structure.

The Catholic Church of Huamdong is one of the first modern architectural churches. It stands alongside Hyehwa-dong Church. The concrete structure partially exposes brick. This combines new techniques and older styles.

The arrangement allows for efficient use of space. This church is located on the hillside. This design became popular. Many churches were constructed. They sprung up throughout Seoul during the post-war 70s.

Before the construction of apartment complexes, the elevated appearance was grand. Before many houses were built, the shape was beautiful. The Catholic Church of Huamdong is a distinct building. It represents South Korea’s modern church history.
