The Ain-i-Akbari a Mughal court document mentions Jhajjar. It speaks of a revenue of 1422451 dams and a force of 1000 infantry and 60 cavalry under a Gahlawat Jat Zamindar.
But Jhajjar is more than a tax collector’s record. It was a stronghold a center of resistance. Ahlawat Jats from Dighal withstood the Marathas for months. They defeated them several times. This fierce spirit continues. Jhajjar boasts a high number of soldiers in the Indian Army. General Dalbir Singh Suhag a former Army Chief hails from Jhajjar. The 1857 rebellion left its mark too. Three chiefs Abdur Rehman Nawab of Jhajjar Nahar Singh Raja of Ballabhgarh and Ahmad Ali Nawab of Farrukhnagar were hanged in Old Delhi.
The Jhajjar district itself spans 1890 square kilometers. In 2001 its population was 709000. Its economy blends agriculture and industry. Rice wheat and maize flourish. Two industrial areas house ceramics glass chemical engineering electrical and electronics businesses.
Jhajjar’s past is rich and layered. The Gahlawat Jats founded Jhajjar city. But other Jat clans also left their legacy. The Dalal Jats of Mandothi had their own principality. They even established a state in Kuchesar Uttar Pradesh. Kadyan Jats ruled Beri. Their chiefs fiercely resisted the British in 1857.
