Hidden behind the veil of time, Villa Somaglia-Balconi whispers tales of noble families and bygone eras. Here we stand before Villa Somaglia-Balconi, a place where history and architecture intertwine. This grand villa, along with its accompanying rustic buildings, holds centuries of stories within its walls. Villa Somaglia-Balconi’s story begins in the 15th century in the locality of Pobbia. In 1457, records mention a farmhouse called “Pobia.” This farmhouse played a crucial role in the villa’s history. In 1459, Francesco Pestagalli, the owner of Cascina Pobia, received a tax exemption from Duchess Bianca Maria Visconti. This seemingly small event set the stage for the rise of Villa Somaglia-Balconi. The Pestagalli family built the main villa in the first half of the 18th century. It boasts a distinctive L-shaped floor plan. Inside, a magnificent triple portico welcomes visitors and leads them into the central hall. A grand staircase then ascends to the noble floor. The villa originally included an Italian garden, but sadly, only traces remain today. In the 19th century, the ownership of Villa Somaglia-Balconi changed hands, passing from the Pestagalli family to the Counts Della Somaglia. Then, in 1890, the Balconi family acquired the property. They undertook a significant restoration project, adding living spaces, balconies, and dormers. Interestingly, until the 1980s, Villa Somaglia-Balconi had a functioning chapel that was open to the public. Anna Crespi Recalcati built the chapel in 1681 to serve the local community. Today, only fragments of this once vibrant space remain. As you gaze upon Villa Somaglia-Balconi, remember the families who called this place home. Imagine the echoes of their lives within these walls. Villa Somaglia-Balconi stands as a testament to the passage of time and the enduring power of history.
