Considering a visit to a church that stands as a testament to faith and history? Parroquia San Juan de Mata is such a place. It is not just a church. It is a piece of Madrid’s rich religious and architectural tapestry.

Let’s delve into the story of the Real Parroquia de Santiago y San Juan Bautista. It is also known as the Royal Church of Saint James and Saint John the Baptist. This special church is located on Calle de Santiago. Many people overlook it.

Its history is fascinating. The parish is the oldest Jacobean temple in Madrid. It sits a mere 200 meters from the Almudena Cathedral. Thus, it is an ideal starting point for pilgrims embarking on the Camino de Santiago from Madrid. Every year, over 10000 pilgrimage credentials are given here.

The church we see today dates back to the 19th century. It replaced two earlier temples. These were sadly demolished during Jos Bonaparte’s reign. He sought to widen the Plaza de Oriente in Neoclassical style.

The church is built with brick and granite. These are traditional materials in Madrid architecture. It boasts a large central dome without a drum. Its facade is rather flat. Tuscan order pilasters and a triglyphs frieze enliven it. There is also a very protruding cornice. The upper body features an arched window. Herrerian influences are evident in the facings. Scallops and crosses of the Order of Santiago adorn the lower body windows.

The entrance is a simple architrave doorway. A straight pediment with corbels tops it. A rectangular relief depicts Santiago in the battle of Clavijo. It crowns the pediment.

Inside the Parroquia San Juan de Mata, many artistic treasures await. The magnificent baptism of Christ is located to the right of the main altar. A San Juan Niño is also interesting. It is a beautiful baroque sculpture of Andalusian school. A Virgen de la Esperanza has a funny throne of Angels. An image of the Blessed Mariana of Jesus who was baptized in the ancient parish of Santiago is also present. A San Juan Nepomuceno and a Virgen del Carmen complete a valuable sculptural collection.

The Church of Santiago and San Juan Bautista also marks the start of the Camino de Uclés. This pilgrimage route also relates to the apostle Santiago. It ends at the Monasterio de Uclés in Cuenca. The Order of Santiago built the monastery. It served as the order’s central house. The route is 144 km long. It can be completed in six stages by walking or biking.

Parroquia San Juan de Mata is vibrant. It is lively. It is a gorgeous place that draws you back. The Real Parroquia de Santiago and San Juan Bautista has much to offer.
