Perhaps you’ve heard whispers of a hidden gem. This is the Neuländer See. It is tucked away in Hamburg-Neuland.

The Neuländer See isn’t just any lake. It is the second largest lake in Hamburg. It spans approximately 48 hectares. At its deepest point, it measures an impressive 20 meters. Some spots plunge even further to over 30 meters. This makes it the deepest lake in the area.

Once, this area was a large pit. A lot of gravel was extracted from it. After the excavation, the pit gradually filled with water. Since then, the area around the Neuländer See has been transformed. A park was created. Walking paths now encircle the entire lake. Its large meadows attract many visitors. They come to bath in the sun or play games.

The Neuländer See is known for its wide range of water sports. Relaxing by the water is also popular. You can watch the water sports enthusiasts. The most popular activity is the water ski and wakeboard facility. It attracts many people when the season starts. There is also a beach with a lawn for sunbathing. On sunny days, you can see many people sunbathing. Some jump into the water for a swim.

If you get hungry, there is a snack stand. It offers ice cream, snacks, fries, and both cold and hot drinks.

Since 2013, there has been a water sports and environmental center. It features several buildings and a boathouse. Students from the region come here. They take part in rowing lessons. They also attend biology classes in the “Green Classroom”.

Hamburg’s first water ski lift is also here at Neuländer See. In the afternoon, various clubs offer activities to participate in.

Getting to the Neuländer See is easy. If you’re coming from Hamburg city center by car, it takes about 15 minutes. Take the B4 and A1 highways. Take the exit HH-Harburg. Follow Neuländer Straße. The parking lot for the lawn is right by the facility. It’s free. Just follow the gravel path. Keep slightly to the left until you arrive.

There is a tragic side to the Neuländer See. The lake has dangerous cold undercurrents. The visibility is poor. Its pH value is over 9. This does not meet EU bathing water standards. Swimming is officially prohibited. A 17-year-old girl drowned. This happened because the lake drops steeply after just a few meters.

Despite the ban, some people still ignore the signs. They risk a swim in the Neuländer See.

So, while the Neuländer See offers leisure activities, caution is paramount. The Neuländer See’s beauty hides potential dangers.
