Brewster Park. A place where echoes of laughter and music mingle with the ghosts of a vanished community. Here, on this seemingly empty expanse, once stood the Brewster-Douglass Housing Projects, a landmark etched in Detroit’s history. Brewster-Douglass, the largest residential housing project owned by the city, was more than just bricks and mortar. It was a microcosm of life, a melting pot of dreams and struggles. Originally named the Frederick Douglass Homes, Brewster-Douglass was built between 1935 and 1955 in the Brush Park area. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt herself broke ground for the initial 701-unit development. The project expanded, eventually encompassing low-rise apartments, six 14-story high-rises, and rows of townhomes. At its zenith, Brewster-Douglass housed a staggering 8,000 to 10,000 residents. Imagine the vibrant tapestry of life within these walls. Brewster Park was a community within a city, complete with its own schools, shops, and a bustling social scene. This was where future Motown stars like Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, and Florence Ballard spent their formative years, their voices rising amidst the everyday rhythms of life. But Brewster-Douglass was more than just a stage for budding talent. It was a complex community, facing the same challenges that plagued many urban housing projects of the era. Built for the “working poor”, with strict tenancy requirements, it later saw a decline as economic shifts and social pressures took their toll. Crime became a growing concern, and the physical structures began to deteriorate. By the 1990s, the Brewster Project underwent a transformation. The original low-rise buildings were demolished, making way for 250 townhomes. This marked the beginning of the end for the original Brewster-Douglass complex. The remaining high-rises eventually met the same fate, demolished between 2003 and 2014. Now, as you stand in Brewster Park, you stand on the grounds of a vanished city, a place where lives intertwined, where dreams were chased, and where history unfolded. The echoes of those who called Brewster-Douglass home still linger, reminding us of the vibrant community that once thrived here.
