How high do you think these sentinels stand? The Manhattan Sentinels greet you. Four cast-iron totems they are. They range from 36 to 39 feet tall. These aren’t just sculptures. They’re a statement. They’re a dialogue with our city. Think about it. In the past similar forms served as monuments. Monuments to civic pride. Spiritual devotion. These sentinels though? They celebrate something else. Human aspirations. Continuity. They invite us to reflect on shared experiences. Shared meanings.

Beverly Pepper created the Manhattan Sentinels. She’s a New Yorker. She studied at Pratt Institute and the Art Students League. She even trained with Fernand Léger and André Lhote in Paris. Her work is in major museums worldwide. The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Hirshhorn. Even the Barcelona Museum of Modern Art. She’s a master.

These sentinels stand at 26 Federal Plaza in downtown Manhattan. They’re often mistaken for a 9/11 memorial. The totems look like they could be building materials from the World Trade Center. But that’s not true. The Manhattan Sentinels predate 9/11. They were created between 1993 and 1996. A GSA award recognized them. Three sentinels stand together. They’re arranged throughout the plaza. They’re meant to resemble trees. They’re part of the landscape now. A permanent fixture.

Imagine sitting on the grass between them. Feeling the cool iron beneath your fingers. Looking up at these towering forms. These giants of cast iron. They guard Federal Plaza. They stand tall. They’re silent witnesses to the city’s life. They’ve seen it all. From busy days to quiet nights. They have stood the test of time. These sentinels. They remind us of the city’s enduring spirit. Its constant evolution. Its resilience. Beverly Pepper’s Manhattan Sentinels. They are more than just sculptures. They are symbols. Powerful symbols. They are Manhattan’s sentinels. They watch over us.
