What secrets whisper through steel? Here at the Tor der Begegnung, secrets are etched into the very metal. The Tor der Begegnung, or “Gate of Encounter,” isn’t just a sculpture. It’s a towering blend of art and architecture, a bold geometric statement in the Kandinskyallee. A rust-colored steel cuboid, twice as high as it is wide, stands firm on a square base. Rectangular cutouts in the lower section invite you to peek through, to walk through, to engage. The glistening metal interior contrasts with the weathered exterior, creating a sense of both solidity and transparency. Look closely. Fragments of sentences are embedded in the steel above the four passageways, like overheard snippets of conversation. They appear random, yet they’re carefully chosen words, a quote from Kandinsky: “Sprechen vom Geheimen durch Geheimes,” or “Speaking of the secret through secrets,” written in both German and Russian. This sculpture is more than just steel. It’s a symbol, erected in 1990, a testament to a moment in history – the German reunification. It bridges the bustling shopping center to the south with the sports and recreation areas to the north, a physical and symbolic link.
