The British, after demolishing the original Aban Palace, built the current structure in 1925. They intended it as a residence for the returning Asantehene, Prempeh I, after his exile. The British had hoped to diminish his authority by relegating him to a British-style “bungalow.” They even attempted to limit his title to “Kumasihene,” confining his rule to Kumasi alone.
